🤖 Tom Hanks, Robin Wright to be de-aged using AI ⏳

PLUS: AI-text detection tool released by OpenAI 🤖

Greetings, fellow humans. 👋

This is Not A Bot - the newsletter about AI that was definitely not written by AI. I’m Haroon, founder of AI For Anyone, and I share the latest news, tools, and resources from the AI space.

Today, I woke up to the first real snowfall in NYC this year, and what a sight to behold. Okay, it’s just a dusting, but I’m excited nonetheless.

There’s just something about snowy days that brings back nostalgia from the good old days. You know, the days when school would be canceled, and you’d spend the day building snowmen, throwing snowballs, and drinking hot cocoa.

Come to think of it, what’s stopping me from doing all that now? 🤔

PS - thanks to everyone who shared new parent advice with me yesterday. I appreciate all of the wisdom. 🧡

⏳️ Tom Hanks, Robin Wright to be de-aged using AI

Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, stars in Robert Zemeckis' upcoming Miramax movie Here, will be de-aged using a new AI-driven tool called Metaphysic Live.

Joanna Popper, chief metaverse officer at CAA (the powerhouse entertainment agency), has entered into a strategic partnership with Metaphysic to develop generative AI tools and services for talent.

Metaphysic Live will create high-resolution photorealistic face swaps and de-aging effects in real time.

Here is an adaptation of Richard McGuire's graphic novel. The movie is scheduled for a 2024 release in the U.S. by Sony Pictures Entertainment, with Metaphysic co-founder Chris Ume serving as AI supervisor and chief innovation officer Jo Plaete as Metaphysic VFX supervisor.

Metaphysic CEO Tom Graham believes AI-generated content will shape the future of entertainment, allowing people to create photorealistic immersive content while controlling their data.

Not to mention, de-aging using AI is much, much cheaper than the alternative (used in films like The Irishman).

🤖 AI-text detection tool released by OpenAI

Yesterday, OpenAI announced a new AI classifier designed to detect AI-written text.

The classifier is not fully reliable, as many Twitter users have realized (exhibit 1, 2, 3), but its accuracy increases as input text gets longer.

The classifier has many limitations, and OpenAI openly states that it should not be used as a primary decision-making tool.

But if OpenAI is transparent about the tool not being fully reliable, why is it being released to the public?

It’s because OpenAI hopes to gather feedback on its usefulness and improve the model based on that feedback. We can expect the detector to get significantly better in the coming months.

Reddit AMA with Professor Toby Walsh, a leading artificial intelligence researcher investigating the impacts of AI on society [Reddit] - Really interesting interview where Toby discusses how AI tools like ChatGPT are going to impact education and what we should be doing about it.

The Difference Between Speaking and Thinking [The Atlantic] - ChatGPT is a type of AI that can generate human-sounding language, potentially leading people to believe it has some intent or sentience. However, it often says absurd things and has a limited capacity for language and thought, which cognitive scientists and linguists address in a new paper. This paper suggests that the ability to communicate via language does not imply a capacity for thought and should lead to a re-evaluation of the limits and complexities of both artificial and human intelligence.

DeepMind’s ChatGPT-Like AI Writes Amazing Screenplays! [YouTube] - DeepMind's Dramatron is an AI that writes screenplays based on a one-sentence summary of the dramatic conflict. It can generate titles, character descriptions, outlines, full scripts, and location descriptions. In a user study, 77% of expert screenwriters found that the AI helped them express their creative goals. Four of the scripts co-written by the AI were performed at a theater festival, showing that human-AI collaboration is possible.
