📎 Microsoft announces new AI-powered Bing homepage that you can chat with
The first shot of the week has been fired.
During their surprise event, which took place uncoincidentally only a day before Google’s planned search event (today), Microsoft announced a new AI-powered Bing.
As expected, Microsoft is using OpenAI's GPT technologies to power the search engine, as well as Microsoft Edge as the first browser.
Here's a peek at how the new Bing search (powered by OpenAI) works. 🤯

The new Bing has an expanded chat box that can answer more than just factual questions. It can create itineraries, answer questions with many contexts, and more.
And it doesn’t stop at Bing.
Microsoft announced an updated Edge browser, with a built-in personal AI assistant. Karen Cheng does a deeper dive into its specific features in this Twitter thread:

Today, Google is expected to roll out its ChatGPT-like tool called Bard, which it plans to incorporate into its core search tool. Will we see them incorporate it into Chrome as well?
I bet Sundar Pichai (CEO, Google) is feeling like 1-3 Lebron right now.
Let’s see what he’s got in store today.

🗞️ Byte size: AI article summaries

FDA has now cleared more than 500 healthcare AI algorithms [Health Exec] - As of January 2023, The FDA has cleared more than 500 healthcare AI algorithms, most of which are related to medical imaging. The very first AI algorithm to be cleared by the FDA was in 1995, and the FDA approved 178 new AI and machine learning systems in October 2020. The role of AI in medicine is increasing quickly as AI is used to improve diagnostic capabilities and provide better patient care. AI's high accuracy of pattern recognition has led to a concentration of market approvals on the imaging side, and AI is also being used in non-clinical areas of healthcare, such as population health, health tracking, revenue cycle management, and data analytics. The FDA is considering a new regulatory framework for AI products to monitor them over time and ensure patient safety.
‘There is no standard’: investigation finds AI algorithms objectify women’s bodies [The Guardian] - This investigation found evidence that AI algorithms developed by large tech companies to detect "raciness" or how sexually suggestive an image is, have a gender bias and are more likely to rate photos of women as sexually suggestive than photos of men. This bias has resulted in the suppression of the reach of many images featuring women's bodies and has hurt female-led businesses. Medical images are also being affected, with Google, Microsoft, and Amazon's AI tools all rating them as "racy" or "explicit nudity." The investigation also uncovered evidence of people hired to label images to help the computers replicate human decisions, which may be reinforcing gender biases. The article also looks at the experiences of photographers who have found their photos taken down or limited in reach without any notification from the platform.
