Boston Dynamics officially has some serious competition.Ā

Brett Adcock, the founder of robotics company Figure, announced yesterday that they are integrating OpenAI's large multimodal AI model into their robot, Figure 01.

This integration enables exciting new capabilities:

  • Robots can now vividly describe their visual surroundings.

  • The use of common sense reasoning to interpret ambiguous commands.

  • The ability to recall memories and explain their actions.

  • The capacity to translate high-level requests into physical behaviors seamlessly.

This isn't just about scripted responses - Figure 01 can understand and respond to open-ended dialogue in real-time.

How how does it work? Figureā€™s robot inputs its camera footage and transcribes speech into OpenAI's model, allowing it to comprehend the entire context and generate intelligent responses while deciding which learned motor skills to use.

For example, Figure 01 can search for an apple if you say, "I'm hungry," or clear the table by placing objects on the drying rack if you say, "The dishes on the table like that plate and cup are likely to go into the drying rack next.ā€

Soā€¦we can communicate with robots now, huh?

After nearly three years of deliberation, the AI Act, introduced in 2021, was endorsed in the EU Parliament session on Wednesday.

This makes it the world's first comprehensive AI law that regulates high-risk and unethical AI applications while fostering innovation.

Here's a rundown of whatā€™s banned:

  • No social scoring systems.

  • No unchecked facial recognition and biometrics.

  • No emotion recognition in workplaces or schools.

  • No predictive policing based solely on profiling.

  • No AI that manipulates human behavior or exploits vulnerabilities.

Plus, the more advanced the AI, the stricter the regulations:

  • General purpose AI must meet basic transparency requirements, like abiding by EU copyright law.

  • Advanced AI systems face additional compliance measures, including risk assessments.

OH, and you can kiss deepfakes goodbye, as all artificial audio, images, and videos must be clearly labeled.

EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola praised the law as "trailblazing" and respectful of human rights. Commissioner Thierry Breton referred to it as "trusted AI" regulation - as minimal as possible but as extensive as needed.

So, which country will enact the next AI law?

Ā šŸ›ļøĀ Metaā€™s shopping spree

According to Meta, 79% of Gen-Z Instagram users have purchased a product after viewing a Reel.

Meta is keen to capitalize on this, rolling out a suite of new AI capabilities to enhance shopping experiences on their platforms.

Hereā€™s the TL;DR

  • Meta's new Advantage Suite updates enable brands to "optimize" video ads by creating multiple hyper-personalized versions for each user.

  • Brands can now suggest product recommendations in their feed based on their browsing history using branded videos and customer demos.

This update also provides advertisers with powerful new methods to encourage purchases:

  • Reminder Ads can now include external product links and promotion details, allowing advertisers to send push notifications about upcoming launches.

  • Brands can highlight sales and automate the sharing of promo codes.

These AI-enhanced shopping capabilities are a boon for brands and Meta's revenue.Ā

For consumers, it might feel like an inescapable vortex of consumerism.

One thing is certain - the push for AI-powered shopping is in full swing šŸ’ø
