Happy Wednesday, fellow humans. 👋

Here’s a fun fact completely unrelated to AI (and perhaps your life): Los Angeles was originally called "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula," which translates to "The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of Porcincula."

Quite the mouthful - let’s stick to LA, shall we?

Anyway, let’s dive into it…

💁 Your newest assistant

Exciting news coming out of Cohere HQ: knowledge assistants are finally here.

Coral is a new AI assistant poised to “revolutionize productivity” for enterprise strategic teams.

Here’s what Coral offers:

  • Conversational: Users can chat with natural language via Cohere's Command model. Coral understands context, remembers history, and is simple to use, allowing users to research, draft, summarize, and more.

  • Customizable: Teams can augment its knowledge via data connections, with Coral providing integrations to CRMs, databases, search engines, support systems, and more.

  • Citations: Coral produces citations so that users can validate responses. Models are trained to find relevant data from multiple sources based on each query.

  • Privacy: Want a business-grade chatbot but need it privately deployed? No problem. Coral keeps your data within your perimeter. Deploy it anywhere.

Overall: It looks like the days of scouring company Notions and Google Drives for PTO information might be long gone. Thank God.

🕵️ OpenAI shuts down AI Detection Tool

Well, that was fast.

OpenAI has given its hyped AI detection tool, Classifier, the boot just six months after it dropped.

Why? It turns out Classifier wasn't quite the AI-catching wunderkind it was made out to be.

And they were pretty secretive about it, too, only revealing Classifier's shutdown through a subtle note update to their original announcement blog post.

OpenAI said the tool wasn't "fully reliable," only detecting 26% of AI text while flagging 9% of human writing as artificial.

Overall: For now, accurately sniffing out AI-generated texts remains an elusive goal.

But OpenAI is committed to developing and deploying mechanisms that enable users to understand if audio or visual content is AI-generated, as more effective techniques for text are being researched.

🏭️ TSMC invests in advanced chip plant

TSMC is on a mission to corner the red-hot AI chip market.

How? By splashing out a cool $2.9 billion on a new semiconductor packaging plant in Taiwan.

TSMC is the largest contract chipmaker in the world and is a leading supplier to companies such as Nvidia and Apple.

However, surging demand for AI chips has left TSMC struggling to keep up. Plus, according to CEO C.C. Wei, TSMC's packaging capacity is maxed out, which means they can’t fulfill all the incoming AI chip orders.

The solve? Invest in a giant advanced packaging plant to double chip production capacity.

Keyword alert: Advanced packaging is essentially a process that involves placing multiple chips into a single device, “lowering the added cost of more powerful computing.”

The plant will open in Tongluo Science Park in 2025 and is estimated to add ~1500 jobs.

And here’s something interesting: Even as TSMC expands globally, they plan to stick to production in Taiwan, “ a global powerhouse in manufacturing semiconductors.”
