🥊 Microsoft makes Google ‘dance’
There’s only one winner from this week’s faceoff between Google and Microsoft…

After the Microsoft x OpenAI tag team abruptly usurped Google’s Wednesday search event, Google finally got a chance to respond.
Aaaaaand they fell completely flat.
So flat that Alphabet’s (Google’s parent company) market cap fell by $100 billion after the event. 😬📉
There were a few gaffes that led to a generally chaotic event. The most notable slip-up, however, was when Google’s new AI chatbot, Bard, made an incorrect statement about the James Webb Space Telescope during an ad demo.
This error was quickly pointed out by social media users (as social media users do), who noted that the telescope had not discovered exoplanets.
Costliest Demo Fail of all time.
Bard made a boo boo. Google lost $100B after it’s experimental ai chatbot bard made an factual error while replying. When asked “ What new discoveries from the James Webb Space telescope can I tell my 9 year old about”

The battle is far from over, but I’m sure few people are happier than Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who, just a few days ago, shared one of the most cold-blooded quotes I’ve heard from a big tech CEO:
"This new Bing will make Google come out and dance, and I want people to know that we made them dance." - @satyanadella

If things continue this way, Satya may rival Steve Jobs for the best corporate comeback stories of all time.

🗞️ Byte size: AI article summaries
Disclaimer: AI is (partially) used to summarize these articles.
AI as Co-Pilot: Your Online Life Is About to Change, Like It or Not [CNET] - Microsoft and OpenAI have created a new AI-powered search engine, Bing, which is set to upend two decades of Google's dominance. It combines information organized by Bing with computer programs that can generate new wording in response to user requests. It will be available on Microsoft's Edge browser and Office productivity apps, as well as other platforms. AI technology is used in various other areas, such as writing advice, retrieving data, and generating highlights. The new Bing has been met with enthusiasm by analysts and reporters. Microsoft is aware of the potential risks of AI and is using its Bing technology to judge the trustworthiness and authority of online documents. Google has also announced a competing AI-powered service, and other companies may join the competition.
Investors obsessing over AI is latest symptom of the 'Amazon disease' [Yahoo] - This article looks at the current hype surrounding artificial intelligence (AI). The stock market's obsession with anything "AI" has been incredibly fast, with companies like Meta Platforms and Microsoft releasing new versions of their products to tap into the trend. Meanwhile, stocks like SoundHound AI and c3.ai have both seen huge gains this year. Steve Eisman of "The Big Short" fame has called this phenomenon the "Amazon Disease," which is when investors look for the next Amazon and bet on companies with the biggest Total Addressable Market (TAM). This article highlights the longer-run forces at play in the modern business world, which often lead back to trying to emulate Jeff Bezos.

Some food for thought.
Do LLMs think? A binary yes or no answer here is insufficient.
Language capability alone is probably not sufficient to build AGI, but my suspicion is that it is a highly serviceable scaffold on which to build the parts that are missing.
