🤖 Google’s LaMDA is finally close to release
During an earnings call yesterday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the company is soon releasing advanced AI features to its search engine in response to the competition posed by Microsoft's ChatGPT.
Google’s language model, LaMDA, is powering these AI features. Yeah, that LaMDA — the same one that ex-Google engineer, Blake Lemoine, believed to be sentient.
The rollout is expected to happen in the “coming weeks and months.”
The features Google is testing internally include a chatbot called “Apprentice Bard” and new search desktop designs. Google is also planning to provide new tools and APIs for developers, creators and partners to use AI, emphasizing composition, construction, and summarization.
Pichai has also warned that they will need to scale slowly, as large language usage is still in the early days.

🔍️ GPT-4 is coming soon (to Bing)
Microsoft's Bing search engine is set to incorporate OpenAI's new GPT-4 software, which is faster and more detailed than the current version. 🏎️💨
This marks a major challenge to Google's dominance in search and could result in increased competition. OpenAI is also launching a mobile version of its ChatGPT software and a new feature for its Dall-E image-generating software. The incorporation of GPT-4 is expected to improve the speed and accuracy of Bing.
It will be aided by users providing feedback with thumbs up/down buttons and writing their ideal answers. Microsoft and OpenAI have built a powerful supercomputer to train their AI models, and OpenAI is also hiring contractors to help with software development.

🗞️ Byte size: AI article summaries
Disclaimer: AI is (partially) used to summarize these articles.
AI Is About to Dump More Work on Everyone [The Atlantic] - This article discusses the potential implications of ChatGPT and the new tool developed by OpenAI to detect AI-generated text. It notes that the tool is limited and may create more work for everyone, as it requires people to distinguish between human and AI text and to be aware of the potential for AI-generated disinformation. The article concludes by warning that AI may be used to create even more bureaucracy and that people may end up working for AI rather than AI helping them with their work. I don’t agree with everything here, but it is interesting nonetheless.
How ChatGPT Kicked Off an A.I. Arms Race [NYTimes] - OpenAI unexpectedly released the chatbot ChatGPT in mid-November 2020 in response to worries that rival companies would beat them to the launch of GPT-4. Despite initial skepticism, ChatGPT has been a huge success and has been used by millions for various purposes. It has also set off an AI arms race with other tech companies, including Google, and Baidu, a Chinese tech giant, is developing their chatbots.
AI Bot ChatGPT Needs Some Help With Math Assignments [WSJ] - ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot created by OpenAI which has been banned from some school networks due to its ability to write essays on complex topics. However, it is not good at math and struggles with calculations. This is because it is a large language model which scans vast amounts of text from the web and develops a model about what words are likely to follow others in a sentence. AI, like calculators and computers, is useful for those who already know the field well, as they know the questions to ask and how to identify the shortcomings.
