📈 Google upgrades SGE

Google continues iterating on its AI moat.

Just months after its launch, Google's generative AI-powered Search experience (SGE) is evolving. Recent updates include more images, better links, and videos in overviews.

Google has also announced more SGE upgrades to help users learn and understand information. Here’s the TL;DR:

  • SGE responses for science, history, and other topics will soon have definitions for key terms. Hover over words to see pop-up definitions, images, and diagrams for simple learning.

  • Coding overviews will also improve. Color-coded elements like keywords and strings will help make debugging generated code simpler.

  • The most exciting feature: A new Search Labs experiment called "SGE while browsing" helps digest long, complex web pages by highlighting key points. It's designed for public articles, not paywalled content.

Overall: These updates showcase how Google is evolving its AI to simplify searching and learning.

SGE is becoming a smarter research assistant day by day.

🚂 Adobe Express is coming for Canva

The Verge

Adobe is doing everything in its power to maintain its edge in the creative industry and ensure they are the leader in the space.

One way is by bringing AI to its Express design platform. Powered by Adobe's Firefly generative model, the new features aim to make content creation accessible for non-designers.

The latest round of updates includes features like:

  • custom image and text generation using text prompts

  • automatic background removal

  • simple character animations using audio

While Adobe Express is similar to Canva and other design platforms, it is still playing catch-up regarding AI-powered features and might take some time before it reaches the level of Photoshop Fill.

Adobe Express’ biggest selling point is that its Firefly generative AI model is commercially safe and entirely trained on Adobe-owned content - i.e., no legal/copyright troubles.

Overall: The new AI capabilities empower non-designers to create engaging content easily. While not as polished as Canva yet, Express offers the Adobe brand appeal, which is becoming somewhat synonymous with design prowess.

Its continuing evolution will be vital for winning over creators.

👋 Meet Lilli

Consulting companies are leveraging AI to take their services to the next level.

Most recently, McKinsey launched "Lilli,” their own AI solution to streamline knowledge for colleagues.

According to the consulting giant, the platform will help provide a “streamlined, impartial search and synthesis of the firm’s vast stores of knowledge,” ultimately helping them bring insights quickly and efficiently to clients.

Training Lilli didn’t seem to be an issue, either. Lilli harnesses McKinsey’s IP through 100,000+ documents and a global expert network in over 40 countries to provide employees with the assistance they need to elevate their work.

Potential use cases for Lilli include:

  • Project planning, taking away hours of overwhelming research.

  • Acting as an “intellectual sparring partner.”

  • Helping employees figure out gaps in their arguments

Overall: Lilli scans knowledge and summarizes key points. But bigger concerns need to be addressed regarding compliance and how Lilli will deal with sensitive information.

It will also be interesting to see which consulting companies follow suit.
