š Athena, Goddess of (AI) War, has entered the chat
Microsoft becomes the latest tech giant to enter the Chips race after Amazon, Google, and Meta.
The Information reported that Satya Nadella and the team have been working on an AI Chip, codename Athena, since 2019 to train LLMs and slowly wean off their reliance on Nvidia.
While Microsoft is not looking to replace Nvidia, this seems like a step in the right direction:
There is a high demand for Nvidia chips. OpenAI estimated they would need at least 30,000 A100 GPUs to commercialize ChatGPT, each selling for more than $40,000 a pop on eBay.
Developing chips in-house would be a nice way to curb that growing cost as MS continues to roll out AI powerhouses in Bing, Github, and Office Apps.
Microsoft is taking a page straight out of Appleās playbook and localizing chip production. This will either be a brilliant move, or an old-fashioned money suck.
Only time will tell.

š«” Is Elon telling us the Truth(GPT)?
Finance. Transportation. Space. Now AI (take 2). Elon Must really does it all.
Muskās new AI platform, TruthGPT, will be ~curious about the universe~ but donāt fret - he believes that this AI is āunlikely to annihilate humansā since we are an āinteresting part of the universeā. Thatās got to be a compliment, right?
Elon didnāt share many details on how this AI would be built. He did, however, ask for government oversight over AI projects, taking a dig at OpenAIās for-profit model and suggesting ethics could be compromised for money.
Overall, we are yet to see how much truth there really is in TruthGPT, and if Musk will abide by his own rules of making it (1) open-source and (2) not-for-profit.
All eyes on you, Elon.

Itās a LLaMAā¦ in a RedPajama
RedPajama, a collaboration between Ontocord.ai, ETH DS3Lab, Stanford CRFM, Hazy Research, and MILA QuƩbec AI Institute, is a fully-open language model created aiming to overcome the limitations imposed by closed commercial models or partially open models.
Today they launched the first of their three key components, the pre-training data:
This is an open-source reproduction of LLaMA.
It filters a data set of over 1.2 trillion tokens, all of which can be downloaded through Hugging Face.
Downside: they are hefty files. They come in a ~3T compressed and ~5T unzipped file version.
It has officially been released and is available for use.
Its other components include:
Base models:
A trained suite of base models hould be available in the next couple of weeks and is being worked on as part of the INCITE program together with the US Dept. of Energy.
Instruction tuning data and models:
This will allow improvements to be made to the base model, making it usable and safe.
Weāre loving the developments in the open-source community and all the llama references. š¦
