πŸ§‘β€πŸ€β€πŸ§‘ The dream team

The Biden administration is putting together the Avengers a high-profile advisory board (dubbed the Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board), focused on protecting critical infrastructure like power grids and airports from potential threats related to AI.

The 22-member board includes tech CEOs like Sam Altman of OpenAI, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, and Sundar Pichai of Alphabet/Google. It also features leaders from major corporations outside of tech, such as Delta Air Lines, Northrop Grumman, and Occidental Petroleum, as well as government officials, including the governor of Maryland and the mayor of Seattle.

Their mission? To develop recommendations for preventing AI-related disruptions that could impact national security, the economy, public health, or safety.

AI experts have warned about various potential threats, from autonomous drone swarms to bioweapons to more effective hacking of critical computer systems.

Overall: Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said the government's defense against AI risks may involve leveraging AI technologies themselves. While noting AI's ability to "advance our national interests," Mayorkas stated the board will help identify best practices and concrete actions to "mitigate" the "real risks" posed by AI.

The board represents the federal government's first major stride into regulating AI as advanced systems like OpenAI's ChatGPT have exploded in popularity.

Apple is on the prowl and proactively seeking partnerships with leading AI companies such as OpenAI and Google.

The goal? To incorporate GenAI capabilities into new iPhone features for the upcoming iOS 18 operating system.

This move precedes Apple's annual WWDC in June, where the iOS 18 and its AI enhancements will be revealed. Apple plans to present these AI features as seamlessly integrated into its devices, emphasizing privacy protection.

Negotiations with OpenAI and Google are ongoing, but Apple may ultimately choose a different AI partner. The company had also previously engaged in discussions with the AI startup Anthropic as well, so anything could happen πŸ‘€

Overall: By collaborating with external AI providers on advanced GenAI, such as chatbots, Apple could quickly introduce cutting-edge features, reducing liability risks compared to exclusively using its own technology.

CEO Tim Cook has recognized the potential of AI, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT. However, he stated that Apple will adopt a "thoughtful" approach, implying that stringent safeguards will be implemented. The upcoming WWDC in June should offer more insights into Apple's AI strategy.

πŸ€– False narratives

A video of a Baltimore school principal, Eric Eiswert, went viral in January for allegedly going on a β€œracist” rant aimed at the students at his school.

But here’s the kicker - it was all fake.

The video was created by their athletics director, Dazhon Darien, who has now been arrested after forensic analysis from the FBI and UC Berkeley confirmed that the recording contained AI-generated content.

Authorities believe Darien created the fake audio using OpenAI tools and language models in retaliation against Eiswert, who had been investigating Darien over potential mishandling of school funds.

Thoughts: While this story got the justice it deserved, the case raises (extremely valid) concerns about the ease of creating deepfakes with AI and the potential for such technologies to be misused for defamation and harassment.

Authorities also acknowledged the lack of specific laws for AI-generated fakes, highlighting the need for new legislation to address these emerging threats.

Overall: Legal experts warn that deepfakes are becoming harder to detect, which means that we must think critically before believing or sharing online content.

The incident should serve as a reminder that AI technologies can be weaponized, even by those close to the victim, highlighting the importance of responsible use and appropriate safeguards.
