💲 Google invests in Anthropic
In a heated funding frenzy, tech titans like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are pouring billions into the world of AI.
Last week, Microsoft allocated $5 billion to boost gen AI initiatives in Australia, building on their substantial commitment to OpenAI.
This week, Google entered the ring with a significant $2 billion investment in Anthropic, a move to challenge Microsoft and OpenAI's undisputed reign in the LLM arena.
What does Anthropic get?
A massive cash injection (obviously).
Vital resources such as compute credits and mutual support from the Google team.
What does Google get? They secure a position in the highly competitive LLM race.
Overall: Big investments like these highlight the massive costs associated with developing and running advanced AI models.
While giants like Google and Amazon subsidize innovation through these investments, they remain reliant on the expertise and leadership of companies like Anthropic and OpenAI in the AI realm.

🔝 Google updates Bard
Google’s Bard got some upgrades. Here’s the TL;DR:
Bard is now offering real-time responses to queries, allowing you to glimpse the response as it's being generated.
If you still prefer the traditional approach, you can switch between the "Respond in real-time" and "Respond when complete" options using the cog icon in Bard's top-right corner.
You can cut off a response mid-sentence by hitting the “Skip response" button, allowing you to either type a new question or regenerate the response without the wait.
If you don’t like a response, you can hit "view other drafts" to see alternate responses and even tailor the tone, making it more "casual" or "professional."
You can also cross-check answers with Google Search.
Overall: With Google’s funding into Anthropic and their improvements to Bard, they seem primed to take on Microsoft and OpenAI in the race to dominate the LLM space.
Who do you think has the upper edge right now?

🧠 Can AI become as logical as humans?
While GPT3 has immense linguistic capabilities, there seems to be severe incompetence in its ability to make logical leaps.
Why? In an excerpt from "A Brief History of Intelligence," Max Bennett talks about the mysteries surrounding AI's ability to mimic the human brain.
These AI systems, including GPT-3, are trained to predict the next word in a sentence, mimicking the predictive functions of the human neocortex. While they can excel at this task, they falter when faced with more complex cognitive challenges.
Humans, on the other hand, simulate scenarios in their minds, reasoning through problems beyond mere word predictions.
This means that despite its vast training data and computational power, GPT-3 falls short when replicating the depth of human cognition.
It’s fascinating to explore the intricacies of AI and human thought because it begs one big question - will AI ever be as competent as humans?
