Diversity issues in AI have long been a concern. A recent Bloomberg experiment seems to confirm it 👇️

GenAI technology, specifically GPT-3.5, exhibits racial biases in job recruitment.

The study method involved systematically assigning names associated with specific racial and ethnic backgrounds to resumes of equal qualification.

AI’s task? To rank these resumes for various job openings.

The results? Disconcerting. GPT-3.5 showed a clear preference for names from specific demographics, failing standard benchmarks for job discrimination.

Of particular concern were:

  • The AI's tendency to stereotype female names into traditionally female-dominated roles, and

  • Its tendency to choose Black female candidates 36% less often for technical positions.

In response to these findings, OpenAI claimed that these results do not reflect their clients’ typical use of their software, many of whom refine responses to reduce bias.

But regardless, the investigation, backed by insights from over 30 experts across various fields, emphasizes the crucial ethical issues of heavily relying on AI without addressing its inherent biases.

Palo Alto's very own Inflection just turbocharged Pi, their beloved personal AI, with Inflection-2.5

Here's the breakdown:

  • Inflection-2.5 enhances efficiency, achieving near GPT-4 performance levels using only 40% of the compute power.

  • Inflection-2.5 performs significantly better than Inflection-1.0, particularly in coding challenges and mathematics.

Inflection’s Pi is also seeing strong signs of product-market fit:

  • Engagement is soaring, with over four billion messages exchanged on the platform.

  • An average conversation with Pi lasts 33 minutes, and 1 in 10 lasts over an hour daily.

  • ~60% of users who communicate with Pi in a given week return the following week (really sticky product).

  • Pi has 6M monthly active users (MAUs) and 1M daily active users (DAUs).

At its core, Inflection-2.5 retains Pi's unique personality and high safety standards while improving its utility and helpfulness.

Check out Pi here, and let us know your thoughts!

Sam Altman has made a notable return to OpenAI's board, marking his full-circle journey after his sudden departure and swift reinstatement as CEO just a few months ago.

Following a comprehensive investigation by law firm WilmerHale, OpenAI announced the conclusion of the inquiry into Altman's firing, along with the introduction of three new board members from prestigious backgrounds.

  • Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Board of Directors at Pfizer, President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.

  • Nicole Seligman, former EVP and Global General Counsel of Sony and President of Sony Entertainment, Board of Directors at Paramount Global.

  • Fidji Simo, CEO and Chair of Instacart and on the Board of Directors at Shopify.

The investigation reveals little about the specifics of Altman's ousting, stating it stemmed from a "breakdown in the relationship and loss of trust" rather than issues related to product safety, development pace, finances, or stakeholder communications.

I wonder if we’ll ever get to the bottom of what truly happened that fateful night 👀
