šŸ˜¬Ā Sam Altmanā€™s had enough

Altmanā€™s been touring the world, from Lagos to the UK, spreading the gospel of OpenAI and ChatGPT.

But while the US has embraced AI with open arms, there is still a lot of anxiety surrounding the tech, especially in Europe.

In a talk at University College London (UCL), Altman emphasized that he ā€œwill look to complyā€ with the rules of the EUā€™s AI Act but wasnā€™t too pleased with their definition of ā€œhigh risk.ā€

He took it a step further, warning that if the proposed definition of "high-risk" systems is not changed, both ChatGPT and GPT-4 could be designated as such, and OpenAI would cease to operate in the region.

Altman has been pretty vocal about AI regulation, and was a big focus of his congressional hearing. So it will be interesting to see how OpenAIā€™s European future unfolds when the AI Act is passed.

One to keep an eye on.

šŸ¤³ TikTok Tako

TikTok Tako - thereā€™s a little morning tongue-twister for ya.

Chatbots are *literally* everywhere - but having them on TikTok actually kinda makes sense.

TikTok is testing an AI chatbot named ā€œTako,ā€ which will appear on the right-hand side of its interface above the userā€™s profile.

Current uses for Tako include:

  • Asking it questions about the video

  • Asking it questions about life (maybe)

  • Asking it for new content recommendations

All done using natural language queries.

Hereā€™s why it makes sense: TikTok is becoming GenZā€™s Google, with ā€‹ā€‹14% of Gen Z adults using TikTok to start researching a major news event, according to Morning Consult.

And having a way to parse through videos and ask questions could turn those ā€œprocrastinationā€ minutes (more like hours) into somewhat educational or productive.

Unless, of course, you are asking the bot for more videos of dogs dressed as US Presidents for Halloween.

Tako is currently being tested in the Phillippines, with future plans yet to be announced.

šŸ“¹ļøĀ Youtube Shorts gets an AI makeover

Short-form content is on the rise, and with potential TikTok bans on the horizon, YouTube is making serious moves to improve ā€˜Shortsā€™ by making it more searchable.

How? By using Google DeepMind's visual language models to generate descriptions for Shorts through its Flamingo model.Ā

The program analyses the initial frames of a video to provide text descriptions that are stored as ā€œmetadata,ā€ used to provide better categorization and match videos to viewer queries.

There is only one issue: The generated descriptions will not be user-facing, which means that even the creators wonā€™t be able to see them.

This could prove problematic, considering current AI models tendĀ toā€¦make things up on the fly.

Mislabelling content could cost content creators a lot of money and land Google in tons of legal trouble.

So hereā€™s hoping that these models areā€¦somewhat accurate.
