No no - not Don Corleone.
In a shocking turn of events, Geoffrey Hinton, the "Godfather of AI," resigned from his decade-long stint at Google with a bit of sorrow and a lot of fear re: his lifeās work.
The 2018 Turing Award winner believes that AI technology carries significant risks, and now is the right time to alert the public.
Although he verified that āGoogle has acted very responsibly,ā he canāt shake the feeling that increased competition in the AI space will only lead to significant ethical issues.
Misinformation is just the tip of the iceberg, according to Hinton. Looking at a longer time horizon, he fears that AI can:
eliminate ārote jobs.ā
potentially eliminate humanity if it learns how to write and run code.
This could either be a whole lot of fear-mongering or a genuine call to action for the powers at be to place the proper checks and balances to address Hintonās concerns.
Earlier this year, there was a petition to pause AI development for 6 months to focus on ethics and safety. Could Hintonās resignation officially press pause on AI?

Microsoft is going for Googleās jugular.
Microsoftās Bing AI is being added to the built-in SwiftKey keyboard in Samsungās One UI, meaning that every Galaxy device now has Bing AI installed.
Bing AI integrates with the keyboard in 3 ways:
Search: users can search the web without leaving the environment.
Chat: users can access Bing chat for detailed queries.
Tone: users can communicate more effectively by customizing their text ātonesā to fit specific situations.
What does this mean? Well, Google is late to the party (again). A while back, there was speculation that Samsung might replace Google with Bing in its Galaxy devices - this power move makes it all the more likely.
Just for reference, Google has $3B in annual revenue on the line if it loses out to Microsoft as Samsungās default browser.
Let the wars commence.

š§ AI for your thoughts?
Do you remember that billion-dollar idea you had on your morning walk, but lost because you didnāt write it down?
Imagine an AI that could transcribe your thoughts so you never forget that billion-dollar idea ever again.
Now stop imagining because itās here - scientists at UT Austin have officially developed an AI system called a semantic decoder that translates a person's brain activity into text.
Participants of the study listened to several hours of podcasts in an fMRI scanner to train the decoder, allowing it to generate text based on the listener's thoughts.
The resultant text is not an exact transcript but just āgeneral thoughts and ideasā in the user's brain.
The decoder currently relies on chunky fMRI scanners, but researchers believe it could eventually be used via more portable brain-imaging systems.
This is a massive find for those who have lost their ability to communicate physically, especially due to strokes, paralysis, or other degenerative diseases.
See, AI can be used for good.
