Happy Monday, fellow humans. šŸ‘‹

Fantastic NBA finals game last night. Heat tie it up 1-1 to take it back to Miami. There is one thing that AI can never take away from humans - and thatā€™s sports.

Letā€™s dive into itā€¦

šŸ„øĀ AI didnā€™t do it

If you live on Twitter, like I unfortunately do, you might have seen the reports last Thursday of an AI drone that killed one of its operators in a mission simulation.

The aerospace associationā€™s blog reported that a US Air Force colonel claimed an ā€œAI drone killed its supervisor in a mission simulation.ā€

But guess what - the simulated mission never happened, and the US Air Force colonel was speaking hypothetically about a thought experiment.

*release the tension*

Look - AI has the potential to be the greatest net positive technology in the world, but truth be told, it also has the potential to cause some serious harm.

For a while now, leaders have warned us about the potential life-altering implications of AI, with a petition being signed that clearly states ā€œhuman extinctionā€ as a cause of concern.

And clickbait headlines like these can cause real fear-mongering and feed into the frenzy.

Itā€™s become more important today to ensure that the news re: AI is accurate so that people will be willing to engage with the technology and not be scared of it.

What do you think of this saga?

šŸŽ„Ā Directors Guild reaches a deal with AI

Hollywood takes a major step forward in its fight against AI, with the Directors Guild of America (DGA) reaching a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) to form a new labor contract.

Among other things, the new three-year deal provides:

  • Increased wages: 5% in year 1, 4% in year 2, and 3.5% in year 3 (great!)

  • Increased residuals: 76% boost in residuals from international streaming (sure!)

  • But most importantly:Ā Protections against AI. The agreement confirms that ā€œAI is not a person and that generative AI cannot replace the duties performed by members.ā€

Thatā€™s a big breakthrough, especially for those who were afraid of AI taking away the creative aspects of the job.

Hopefully, with the DGA getting its way, the AMPTP can work with the Writers Guild (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA to protect them.

But if history (and social media) is any indication, this could be a while.

One to keep an eye on.

šŸ„‘ Unprocessed Food

AI can now tell you how processed your food is on a scale of 0-100. What a world we live in.

Researchers at Northeastern University developed a machine learning algorithm called FoodProX, capable of predicting the degree of processing in food products.

FoodProX bridges gaps in existing nutrient databases and scores foods on a 0 (not processed) to a 100 scale (fully processed - you are eating metal), providing a higher-resolution analysis of processed foods.

And bad news, people - using FoodProX, researchers revealed that more than 73% of the US food system is ultra-processed. That canā€™t be good.

While we all know processed foods are not great to consume, this tool can provide a level of detail not previously obtainable, allowing researchers to examine the health impacts of processed foods in finer detail.

Expect Erewhonā€™s all-organic Hailey Bieber smoothie to go from $18 to $30, with all ingredients ranking a 0 on the process-o-meter.

šŸ¤‘ AI Fundraising News

China AI startup MiniMax is raising over $250 million to work on AI solutions similar to that of Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGP.

8Flow.ai raises $6.6M in seed funding to automate customer support workflows.

šŸ—žļø Byte size: AI article summaries

Disclaimer: AI is (partially) used to summarize these articles.

This AI used GPT-4 to become an expert Minecraft player [TechCrunch] - AI researchers have used GPT-4 and a Minecraft bot called Voyager to build an "embodied agent,ā€ an AI that can move freely and purposefully in a simulated or real environment. It can write code using trial and error + internal conversations with GPT-4 as it navigates Minecraft's environment. The research aims to find methods to help relatively simple AI models learn and apply lessons to future actions. (Read more)

Googleā€™s AI-powered search experience is way too slow [The Verge] - Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) is an experimental feature that uses AI systems to summarize search results. When users opt in to SGE, AI summaries appear under the search box. While the responses to queries are generally accurate, the summaries take a few seconds to show up, and the results are loaded with extra and often unhelpful information. SGE is only available to people who sign up for Google's waitlist on its Search Labs. (Read more)
