Safe Superintelligence (SSI), a new AI startup co-founded by OpenAI's former Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, has secured a massive $1 billion in funding just three months after its inception.
The company, valued at $5 billion, aims to develop safe AI systems that surpass human capabilities.
Here’s the TL;DR:
SSI plans to use the funds for computing power and top talent acquisition.
The startup currently has only 10 employees.
Investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and DST Global.
SSI will focus on R&D for a few years before bringing products to market.
Co-founded by Sutskever, Daniel Gross (CEO), and Daniel Levy, SSI emphasizes AI safety and alignment with human values. This echoes Sutskever's previous work at OpenAI, where he led the now-disbanded "Superalignment" team.
Overall: The substantial funding highlights continued investor interest in foundational AI research, despite a general waning in the sector. SSI's approach differs from OpenAI's, with a regular for-profit structure and a focus on scaling AI in new ways.
As AI safety becomes an increasingly hot topic, SSI joins the ongoing debate about regulating powerful AI systems to prevent potential harm to humanity.

The UK signed the world’s first legally binding international treaty addressing the risks posed by AI.
Signed by Lord Chancellor Shabana Mahmood, the treaty strengthens safeguards for human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The agreement, part of the Council of Europe’s framework, commits nations to collectively manage AI technologies while protecting the public from misuse, such as biased decision-making or misinformation.
The treaty outlines three key safeguards:
Protecting human rights,
Ensuring AI doesn’t compromise democracy, and
Upholding the rule of law.
It also mandates countries to regulate AI-specific risks and prevent harm.
Overall: The UK continues its leadership in AI safety, following its hosting of the AI Safety Summit and the establishment of the world’s first AI Safety Institute. This treaty is seen as a significant step towards shaping AI development responsibly, ensuring it benefits society without eroding fundamental values.
